Kaif Bhopali was an Indian Urdu poet and lyricist. He was a well-known poet in the Urdu mushaira circles, he is most known as the writer of songs in Kamal Amrohi’s 1972 classic, Pakeezah, where he wrote popular songs like Teer-E-Nazar, Chalo dildar chalo, chand ke paar chalo.
Here is a wonderful ghazal written by him and sung by Jagjit Singh:
Jhoom ke jab rindon ne pilaa dii
Sheikh ne chupke chupke dua dii
Ek kami thi Taj mahal mein
Maine teri tasveer laga dii
Aap ne jhoota vaada kar ke
Aaj hamari umr badha dii
Haaye unka tarz-e-mohabbat
Aankh se bas ik boond gira dii
In merriment, when the sinners got me to drink
The priest said a prayer quietly
Something was missing in the Taj Mahal
I placed your picture there
The false promise you made to me
Has increased my age today
Oh the manner in which she loves
Just one drop of tear fell from it
