In aankhon se vaabasta afsaane hazaaron hain

Translation:

There are thousands intoxicated by the lust of these eyes

There are thousands of legends attached to these eyes

You are not alone in love with me, disgraced

This is an excerpt from the song “ In Ankhoon ki Masti” from the renowned film Umrao Jaan. The lyrics for the film were penned by reputed poet Shahryar (16 June 1936 – 13 February 2012). Shahryar was not only an Indian academician but was also a doyen of Urdu poetry. As a Hindi film lyricist he is best known for masterpieces in films such as Gaman, Umrao Jaan and Anjuman by director Muzzafar Ali.

We will delve into the life and work of this magnificent man and discover him through his  graceful poetry and film lyrics.
